Moray hosted its first major UK tennis tournament last week, as the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) brought the boys’ 18-and-under County Cup to Moray Sports Centre.
The three-day event delivered high-quality competition on the centre’s relatively new courts, showcasing some of the brightest young talent in British tennis. Among those making a strong impression was Ukrainian prospect Arsenii Opryshko, who played a key role for the East of Scotland team.
There was further reason to celebrate for Scottish tennis, as East of Scotland secured overall victory. They edged out West of Scotland on the final day to top a competitive group that also featured teams from Hampshire and Leicestershire.
Moray Sports Centre CEO and tournament referee Iain Stokes praised both the standard of play and the atmosphere throughout the event. Drawing on his own tennis background, he also enjoyed reconnecting with familiar faces from across the UK.
“The Hampshire captain was one of my former Dorset county doubles partners, so it was great to catch up,” he said. “All the teams really enjoyed the venue and their time in Moray, even if the journeys were long.”
The centre’s four-court tennis facility, which opened around 18 months ago, proved an impressive stage for the tournament.
The successful hosting of the LTA County Cup marks another milestone for Moray Sports Centre, further establishing it as a growing hub for tennis in the region.
